Free Fighter

The *Street Fighter* movie trailer looks absolutely monstrous—in the best possible way. Everything is shot to perfection, capturing the essence of video game characters—especially the dancing. The protagonist is an Indian character whose "superpower" appears to be an almost unnatural flexibility; his entire body seems to be made of rubber, capable of extreme stretching. Interestingly, the trailer reveals neither the actual plot nor the specific reasons why these characters are fighting one another—which is actually a brilliant creative choice. However, if we look closely at other movies based on this genre of video games—such as *Mortal Kombat*—we often observe a common trope: both the "dark side" characters and the "heroic" characters tend to view themselves and their powers as vastly superior to their opponents. While this makes sense in a certain context, it can significantly impact the narrative. Movies based on video games of this type really need a strong, central lead character; the more depth there is to that character's storyline, the more enjoyable the entire film becomes for the audience. *Mortal Kombat* serves as a good example of this, as its opening sequence establishes a backstory where the entire lineage of Hanzo Hasashi is wiped out—save for his daughter, who survives to carry on his legacy.

If we were given the opportunity to experience the *Street Fighter* movie with that same kind of intense, core-driven storyline, I honestly believe it would be a super-duper hit. After all, "next-level" action is something we’ve come to expect—and usually get—in every movie these days. But when that next-level action is paired with an equally next-level story, screenplay, and character performances, the experience becomes infinitely more enjoyable. Movies based on games of this nature should prioritize the storytelling above all else, because the way storylines were presented in the classic games was truly excellent—even if one played through them ten or fifteen times... Through extensive gameplay, we have come to understand the storyline quite well; previously, we derived immense enjoyment simply from pitting the characters against their opponents in combat. However, this is a full-fledged feature film—and in a proper movie adaptation of a gaming franchise, we naturally expect to see a distinct and exceptionally compelling storyline.

Moreover, *Mortal Kombat 2* stands as a direct competitor to this film, having already won the hearts of audiences with its first installment. The trailer for its sequel is superb, effectively highlighting just how powerful each individual character is set to be. And as for its storyline—it is simply beyond praise; the first film established the narrative so brilliantly that it truly blew our minds. Now, it remains to be seen how the action, storyline, and performances in this second installment will measure up.

As for *Street Fighter*, the plot hasn't been revealed to us in full detail yet; however, we get the distinct impression that the backstory for every single character in this film is going to be incredibly robust. The way the characters are being showcased—particularly with a young woman bringing all these powerful fighters together for a battle—creates a truly fantastic vibe. Now, the ultimate test is whether this movie can rise to the level of *Mortal Kombat*, or fall short.

The trailer is absolutely excellent.
